How do women differ from men in terms of alcohol addiction? There are researches showing that women who drink are at risk for more health and social problems than men who drink. There is also increasing evidence that women are more susceptible to alcohol's damaging effects than are men.
Women are affected by alcohol more rapidly because they tend to have a higher proportion of body fat than men. As fat cannot absorb alcohol, it is concentrated at higher levels in the blood. Women also have less gastric or stomach enzyme that metabolizes or breaks down alcohol before it enters the bloodstream. Women having less dehydrogenase, a liver enzyme will break down alcohol more slowly than a man. Because of this, women absorb up to nearly 30% more alcohol into their bloodstream than men of the same height and weight who drink the same amount of alcohol. Hormone changes during the menstrual cycle can also affect alcohol metabolism adversely, increasing the impact of alcohol.
Alcoholic woman is at greater risk of developing serious illnesses and an increased risk of heart disease, liver disease, ulcers, reproductive problems, osteoporosis, pancreatitis, memory loss, and other illnesses caused by substance and alcohol abuse. Increasing evidence suggests that the detrimental effects of alcohol on the liver are more severe for women than for men. Women develop alcoholic liver disease, particularly alcoholic cirrhosis and hepatitis, after a comparatively shorter period of heavy drinking and at a lower level of daily drinking than men.
Menstrual disorders have also been associated with chronic heavy drinking, which can lead to fertility problems. If a woman does get pregnant and continues to drink, it is not her health only that can be affected. The alcohol in the blood is carried into the baby's bloodstream. Because the baby is still developing, consuming alcohol can lead to a miscarriage. It can also lead to Fetal Alcohol Syndrome or Fetal Alcohol Effects birth defects, which are irreversible.
Alcohol abuse is one thing that every woman should avoid because it brings a lot more damage to them than in men. Alcoholism is best treated by professionals trained in addiction medicine.
